Dr Christopher Mitchell from Lennox Head Medical Group

“The great joy of rural general practice comes from being able to deliver genuinely comprehensive care. Rural general practice is about cradle to grave care and general practice in a small town like Lennox Head is a great example”.

Chris initially studied both emergency medicine and general practice and after finding his first GP rotation to be a fantastic, committed to general practice. Following time in Murwillumbah, Chris helped establish the practice at Lennox Head in 1990 and has been here ever since.

Chris enjoys the challenges of general practice and is committed to doing the absolute best for his patients. This includes helping people with significant health problems to stay well, enjoy the greatest possible quality of life and ideally keep out of hospital.

According to Chris, the focus should be on the person, not their illness. He believes in providing ‘a whole of person’ care.

Chris has been involved in a range of organisations that support high quality care in general practice. He is a past-president of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), as well as a prior board member of both NPS MedicineWise and Therapeutic Guidelines Limited. Chris was awarded Membership of the General Division of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Australia Day 2013 Honours List for services to General Practice.

When not in GP-mode, Chris enjoys tennis and walks on the beach and in the local rainforests.
